Jane Goodall Calls Trump’s Stance On Climate Change ‘Immensely Depressing’

World-renowned primatologist Jane Goodall called the U.S. president’s stance on environmental matters "depressing.”

On Tuesday, Trump took a large step towards dismantling Obama’s efforts to combat climate change, signing an order intended to reinvigorate the coal industry.
World-renowned primatologist Jane Goodall called the U.S. president’s stance on environmental matters "depressing," reports the Huffington Post.
She spoke to the press prior to a scheduled Tuesday talk at the American University in Washington, D.C. and told journalists, “I find it immensely depressing because many of us – not just my institute – have been working really hard to create the Paris agreement and global effort to cut carbon emissions.”
Goodall continued, “Thinking that the USA isn’t going to play its part, such a major industrial country, is really very, very sad and it just means we’re going to have to work harder.”
President Trump has, in the past, expressed his opinion that climate change is a “hoax” invented by China.
He also ran on a platform of doing away with environmental regulations that he claimed are costing Americans, particularly those in the coal industry, jobs.
Trump has indicated a desire for the U.S. to back out of the landmark 2015 Paris accord, but has not made any official move to do so, notes the New York Times.
However, the media outlet notes that according to experts, "by rolling back the policies needed to meet American commitments, the United States essentially announced that it would not comply, whether the nation remains a signatory or not..."
While many see nothing but inevitable doom in that scenario, Goodall notes some good has come of it.
She commented, “People who were apathetic before…now suddenly it’s like they’ve heard a trumpet call — ‘What can we do? We have to do something.’”
