NBC reports that former major league pitcher Anthony Varvaro was killed in a car collision while driving to a 9/11 memorial event in New York City.
Varvaro left Major League Baseball to
become a Port Authority of New York and
New Jersey police officer in 2016. .
According to police and team officials, he was assigned
to work at a 9/11 memorial in Manhattan when his
vehicle was struck by an apparent "wrong-way driver." .
New Jersey State Police said in a statement that Varvaro was en route to the assignment at the World Trade Center ceremonies when his car was struck by a Toyota RAV4.
